The Auvergne is perhaps the last region of France to offer a real taste of
French life as it has been lived for centuries. Although the Auvergne has all
the facilities a modern tourist expects, the quaint villages, the age-old
landscape and the quiet pace of life all conspire to make a holiday in the
Auvergne a genuinely French experience. A camping holiday in the Auvergne gives
you the opportunity to feel a part of this traditional way of life.
Some of France's most spectacular scenery is found here, especially the
volcanic hills of the Monts de Cantal and the Parc National des Volcans
d'Auvergne. These long-extinct volcanoes have fashioned a strange and
other-worldly landscape in what is the Massif Central. In recent years the
region has awoken from its long isolation and now offers all the activities you
might expect, from excellent walking and mountain biking tracks, to horse
riding, pot-holing, climbing and kayaking. Regional traditions are still very
much in evidence, and should you find yourself here during the chestnut harvest
make sure you visit a chestnut fair and be amazed at the culinary uses of this
humble fruit.
Although the countryside is the real draw of the Auvergne a visit to some of
its old towns is worth while, particularly Le Puy en Velay with its cathedral
featuring a famous black Madonna, and the Church of St-Michel built atop a
finger of black volcanic rock. The town's three pillars of basalt rock are all
crowned by a church or statue, and present one of the most spectacular views in
France.
The Auvergne is not difficult to reach, with the A71 autoroute going into its
heart. Check the route on our
