A camping holiday on Lake Garda offers the opportunity to enjoy one of Europe's
most beautiful lakes. At the northern end of Lake Garda, Italy's largest lake, you
will find the lively town of Riva del Garda, where the surrounding mountains seem
to creep right down to the shore. Riva is popular with windsurfers, as there is
often a brisk breeze blowing down from the mountains. As you travel southwards down
the lake the mountains slowly withdraw, and at the southern end of Lake Garda you
are on the great plain of the Po. From here it is easy to visit Verona, less than
an hour's drive, or Venice, a couple of hours away.
There is a road along both western and eastern shores of Lake Garda, giving good
access to all the campsites, although the road is narrow and twisty in parts. All
along the shore are pretty small towns with all the amenities for tourists. Some
of the most rewarding to visit are Riva del Garda itself, Limone sul Garda and Gardone
Riviera on the western shore, and Malcesine, Garda and Bardolino on the eastern.
At the south of the lake is attractive Simione. Frequent ferries ply up and down
the lake, offering an alternative and relaxing way of visiting.
There are walking tracks in the hills around the lake, and kayaking, swimming
and canoeing are possible on the lake itself. All this, combined with easy access
to the historic cities of the plain, makes a camping holiday on Lake Garda a popular
option.
Flights are available to Verona or Brescia, where you can hire a car from
Auto Europe Car Hire or
Argus Car Hire. If you drive
it's about a 10 hour drive, not including stops, from Calais, via the Brenner Pass.
