Gascony may be one of the most far-flung areas of France from the UK, but the
two countries have a long history together. Gascony forms a triangle with Bordeaux,
Toulouse and Biarritz at its extremes. It includes the French Basque country in
the far South-West. The landscape is therefore varied, encompassing the huge man-made
forests of Les Landes, the holiday coastline, and the foothills of the Pyrenees.
It might not be that popular a destination with the British, but the French love
Gascogne. So it's a great region to visit if you'd like a bit less of the British
on holiday and a bit more of a French feel.
Camping holidays in Gascony are the perfect way to experience this fascinating
corner of France. The climate is good, with the heat of summer being tempered by
breezes from the Atlantic. These same breezes are responsible for creating perhaps
the best surfing conditions in Europe (along with North Cornwall), so camping in
one of the coastal campsites is a great option for surfers. Families are well catered
for, with beaches stretching for miles and children-friendly campsites, as well
as plenty of child-orientated activities.
Gascony is not difficult to reach especially if you take one of the
Brittany Ferries crossings.
It's a 5 and a half hour drive (not including stops) from St Malo, or about
an extra hour from Caen. Click for information on other
ferry crossings, including
Eurotunnel. Check
