The Jura range of hills and mountains are not always the first choice of the
British holiday-maker, but those who have visited the area are enthusiastic in
singing its praises. In France, close to the Swiss border, the hills extend from
west of Geneva up to and into Switzerland, terminating to the west of Lausanne.
The Jura offers countless kms of well-marked walking paths through forests of
pine, beech and birch, with fantastic views across Lake Geneva to the alpine
peaks beyond. On the lower slopes of the Jura the many quaint villages have
managed to preserve their identity, and a driving or cycling tour through these
will reveal many pleasures. The slopes are home to many vineyards, and
wine-tasting is a favourite way to spend an hour or two.
About 25 km from Lons-le-Saunier, the Lac de Chalain is a pretty lake with
crystal-clear waters where you can swim or canoe, and the countryside around is
excellent for walking. Both Camping La Pergola and the Domaine de Chalain are on
the shores of the lake.
The Campsite Val de Bonnal is actually in the region of the Doubs, not the
Jura. It also enjoys a lakeside setting and is within easy reach of Besancon,
about 40km away. The Doubs region is one of the prettiest in France,
characterised by forests, rivers, gorges and historic small towns.
