The region of Languedoc-Roussillon boasts some of the best beaches in Europe.
Mile upon mile of golden sand lapped by the gentle waters of the Mediterranean make
this region a great place for family camping holidays, and the many campsites strung
along the coast ensure that children are well provided for. There are all sorts
of activities arranged for children, with discos for the older ones, and plenty
of opportunities for leaving the kids in one of the many children's clubs while
mum and dad take some time for themselves.
If you tire of the campsite, the towns of the region have much to offer in the
way of eating and drinking opportunities. Some, like Canet Plage, are practically
purpose built resorts, while others like Sete are bustling ports and commercial
centres. Or there's the pretty old harbourside village of Collioure, close to the
Spanish border.
But a camping holiday in Languedoc Roussillon isn't just about the beach. The
area is steeped in history, going right back to the time before the Romans when
the Cathars were the dominant people. Visit the fantastic walled city of Carcassonne,
one of the best preserved medieval towns in the world. Languedoc-Roussillon has
a fantastic artistic heritage, most famously in the town of Arles, where Van Gogh
lived and painted.
