The Loire valley is deservedly popular with British tourists. Easy to reach
by car from the UK, yet offering a real taste of France. A camping holiday in
the Loire means lazy days relaxing in shaded woodland in campsites with
excellent amenities after some sight-seeing visiting the historic chateaux for
which the Loire is famous.
Most towns have their own chateau, the most
well-known being Blois, Saumur, Angers, where there is also an amazing medieval
tapestry, Chinon and Amboise. In addition be sure to take in the Chateaux of
Azay-le-Rideau, which offers a spectacular son et lumiere show, and Chenonceau,
perhaps the most beautiful of all and created largely by a series of
aristocratic women.
A camping holiday in the Loire also gives you the opportunity to explore the
pastoral countryside, through which flows not only the Loire itself but also the
Indre. These rivers are often bordered by small roads and paths where cycling
and walking is a pleasure. Care should be taken if swimming in the rivers, as
they are large and in places fast-flowing, with hidden currents and depths. But
all the same there are plenty of safe swimming places.
The Loire is also a producer of some excellent wines, and many of the
vineyards offer tastings.
Your choice of ferry crossing will probably be determined by where you live,
as even from Calais it's only about a 5 hour drive to Tours, (excluding stops)
and less than 3 hours from Caen. Check out our
