Normandy is a great place for a camping holiday. The long coastline has miles
of sandy beaches for sunbathing or swimming, dramatic cliffs and headlands with
some great walks, quaint towns with old fishing harbours like Honfleur, or
fashionable resorts like Deauville. Inland you'll find huge tracts of almost
untouched forest with walking and cycling tracks, though which flow lazy rivers
with meadows and woods along their banks.
Of course many people visit Normandy because of its recent history in the two
World Wars, and there are many specialised tours of the battlefields and landing
beaches, or you can just make your own way around.
Normandy's large towns and cities are also worth visiting. Rouen is the
regional capital, with an impressive cathedral, a lively fish market (even the
market building is shaped like a fish!), and an interesting old town. The famous
tapestry at Bayeux, telling the story of the Norman Conquest, is a must-see, and
Caen is worth a visit for its well-preserved city walls. In the far west, close
to Brittany, is the world-famous island monastery of le Mont-St-Michel, reached
by a causeway, a very busy tourist destination.
Normandy enjoys the additional advantage of being very easy to reach from the
UK, with the ferryports of Dieppe, Le Havre, Caen (Ouistreham) and Cherbourg in
Normandy itself. For
