A camping holiday in Picardy is a real value-for-money way to experience a
part of France which, although only a short distance from the UK across the
English Channel, is truly French. Picardy incorporates several Départements and
the two campsites of Drancourt and Le Bien Assise are in Sommes and Nord Pas de
Calais respectively.
Le Bien Assise is near the small town of Guines, about 13 km from Calais, so
is one of the closest campsites to the UK. It's excellent for a short stop, but
as is features a good restaurant and a covered pool with a children's
waterslide, you can enjoy longer stops here. From Guines you can explore the
Northern French countryside and the historic towns such as Boulogne with its
well-preserved old town and Montreuil-sur-Mer, situated atop a hill with
spectacular views all around. The nearby coastline has sandy beaches and
towering cliffs.
The Chateau Domaine de Drancourt is further down the coast on the mouth of
the Sommes, about one and a half hours from Calais, an hour from Boulogne and
the same from Dieppe. Set in the lovely gardens of the Chateau, with 3 pools - 1
covered - and a restaurant, this site also offers a good base for a camping
holiday in this interesting part of France. The medieval port town of St Valéry
is just down the road, while the wide sandy beaches of the Cote Opal are just to
the north.
Of course it really makes sense to use your car as these sites are so easy to
drive to. And you can take as much luggage as you can pack in! You have the
choice of the Dover Calais crossing with
SeaFrance or
P{&}O Ferries, or the more expensive but faster Shuttle through the Channel
Tunnel with
Eurotunnel.
